PENTHOUSE RESIDENCE
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS 2001

Situated in the penthouse of a former Chicago hotel overlooking Lake Michigan, this 8,000sf apartment capitalizes on the abundant exposure of a "tee" shaped plan. An upper roof terrace provides an extraordinary outdoor space in the center of the city.

Interiors by Leslie Jones Interiors, Chicago, Illinois. All photographs by Steve Hall of Hedrich Blessing, Chicago. General Contractor was The Meyne Company, a division of Bulley & Andrews.

Entry Hall

Cantilevered from an adjacent wall, the stair ascends to the roof terrace, which overlooks Oak Street Beach.

Main Hall

The ipe floor continues uninterrupted to the Living Room and the view of the lake beyond. The library, outfitted with liquid crystal privacy glass, is situated to the right.

Living Room

Surrounded on three sides by floor to ceiling windows, the living room enjoys a spectacular panorama of the lake and the city.

Library

Mild steel book shelves line the inner walls of the room, which looks out east over the lake.

Kitchen

A view to the south looking toward the entry illustrates the kitchen's central island and outer bank of cabinets which straddle the exterior wall.

Kitchen

A view from the south illustrates the structural translucent glass wall that supports the upper cabinets along the windows. A ten foot high sliding steel door seen in the distance provides privacy.

Kitchen

The structural glass wall obscures the view of an adjacent building while allowing abundant daylight into the kitchen interior.

Library Shelves

A rolling library ladder traverses the inner bank of bookshelves in the study.

Lavatory

A freestanding marble lavatory was carved for the guest powder room. An button on the floor activates the water flow.
