HIGH RISE RESIDENCE

This apartment is a 9th and 10th floor duplex in a landmark district, Art Deco, high-rise on Chicago's gold coast (near north side), with a sweeping skyline view and a partial lake view. Despite extensive functional alterations required, great care was taken to maintain the existing architectural character of the original space that included high ceilings, tall doors, and large entertaining spaces with casement window views of the city. The Owners were reminded of Paris. The combination of Art Deco character, a desire to capitalize on the Parisian feel of the space, and a general interest in a modern counterpoint to the traditional organization of the rooms inspired us to look at the work of Pierre Chareau, an early modern/art deco master and architect of the Maison de Verre in Paris. The Dining Room shelves designed to hold the owners extensive collection of pottery are an homage of sorts to Chareau. Constructed of perforated steel sheets and rolled steel tubes, they are left in their natural raw state with only an oiled finish applied to preserve the tool marks and light patina of rust. The steel and glass doors, radiator covers, and grilles are constructed of similar materials and extend the theme in more subtle ways throughout the apartment.
