KRAUSE MUSIC STORE |

Studio V Design, located in the former Krause Music Store on Lincoln Avenue. This 2 story masonry building with pale green terra cotta façade was originally completed in 1922. As the last built commission of famed architect Louis Sullivan, the elaborate terra-cotta façade was designated a Chicago Landmark in 1977, and a National Register of Historic Places in 2006. Scope of work for Wheeler Kearns Architects consists of total renovation of the First Floor for the Marketing and Communications firm’s new office, and improvements of the Second Floor apartment for rental. Façade restoration scope of work was contracted through preservation architect, McGuire Igleski & Associates, Inc. Since the landmark status applies exclusively to the building façade, Chicago Landmarks Division’s concerns include sightlines through the façade, primarily the showcase window, and any new construction that comes into contact with the façade. In addition to spatial and functional requirements to support a highly collaborative workplace, the husband-and-wife owner’s criteria for their new office also included their spiritual needs. A Feng Shui Master was consulted for optimal placement of the various functions, a meditation room provided for the owners, and a private garden accessible to the whole office was provided. Visual connection between everyone as well as the garden was important. Photos by Steve Hall, Hedrich Blessing. General Contractor was GGC (Goldberg General Contracting). |
