PRIVATE RESIDENCE
CAMP MADRON
BUCHANAN, MICHIGAN 1989

Sited on one of the building sites at Camp Madron, this straightforward design solution capitalizes on a unique site with panoramic views to varied landscapes. The living level of this vacation home is raised upon a podium of bedrooms, in the spirit of a "piano nobile". The interior is marked by a central stair and brightly colored service core.

Spartan construction details and material palettes were inspired by a limited construction budget.

Facade

Situated adjacent to the central stair, the library provides a critical centrally located resource.

Panorama

The house was constructed without the use of a single window. All glass is provided by sliding glass doors, even on the upper level.

Upper Floor

An overall view of the upper floor. The floating blue mass to the left shrouds the kitchen from view.

Woodstove

Each end of the upper floor is accented by a wood stove. The stoves are manufactured by Rais-Wittus.
